History

Outside is the lively open air market where Michael Marks first opened his Penny Bazaar (1884) which was to lead, ultimately, to the foundation of Marks & Spencer, in 1890.

Today M & S is one of the largest chains of shops in Europe and yet still maintains it's heritage to Leeds Kirkgate Market.

The open air market still offers goods at surprisingly low prices and some of the traders are not averse to a little haggling!!
